From Anxiety to Assurance

If you’re somebody who experiences anxiety when thinking about the dentist, you’re not alone. This is a fairly common phenomenon known as dental anxiety, and it may occur in people of any age for a number of reasons. At Dentessence, we understand the thoughts and fears you may be experiencing, and it’s our aim to help you feel as comfortable as possible.

One of the main reasons people may have dental anxiety is because of bad dental experiences in the past. These negative experiences may have involved pain, discomfort, or feelings of being rushed or unheard. Our compassionate team is here to change that narrative and to prioritise your mental health as much as your oral health.

Is Nitrous Oxide Right For Me?

Nitrous oxide typically makes people feel relaxed or ‘woozy’, and, in most cases, still allows people to drive afterwards. However, if you feel uncomfortable with the idea of driving afterwards, we recommend you have a support person who is able to drive you home or arrange other transportation. While most people are able to have nitrous oxide, our dentists will assess your individual needs and medical history with the aim of discovering the best options for your dental care while ensuring a comfortable experience. Your well-being is our priority!

Your Dental Anxiety Questions Answered

Dental anxiety is a common feeling of unease or fear relating to dental visits. The reason for it will differ from person to person, but in many cases, may be due to past negative experiences, the fear of pain, or the fear of a loss of control. At Dentessence, we understand these fears without judgment and work with you to provide a positive experience.
Please let us know when you make your appointment if you experience dental anxiety, whether you feel you may need nitrous oxide or not. If so, we can discuss whether it’s right for you (and if so, have it ready for you). In any case, we would like to know so we can help you feel comfortable during your appointment. Before your appointment, you may wish to practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation.
Ensuring you brush and floss regularly is paramount for everybody’s oral health, and this is something we recommend for every patient. We can also discuss strategies for your next appointment with the aim of managing your anxiety and maintaining your oral health.
