Orthodontics is a type of dentistry in which the position of the teeth and bite is improved using dental braces, plates, headgear and aligners. Orthodontic treatment is used to correct crowded, crooked or bucked teeth. The position of the teeth and jaw is corrected which not only aesthetically improves the smile and bite but can also improve facial features. There are many options to straighten teeth and at Dentessence we offer conventional dental braces as well as clear aligners.
Depending on your individual situation, your treatment may take between 12 to 24 months. A pre-treatment consultation at Dentessence with Dr Sandeep Arora will allow us to provide you an accurate timeframe for your treatment.
At this appointment Dr Arora will discuss your options with you, provide you cost estimates, undertake a comprehensive oral assessment, x-rays and take moulds of your teeth. From there you can decide the best treatment to help you achieve a straight and healthy smile.
Traditional conventional metal braces are the most efficient teeth straightening method available although there have been advances in their size, appearance and application over time. The traditional conventional braces use stainless steel brackets, which are fitted on to the tooth surface with an archwire fitted between these brackets. The archwire along with elastics or other techniques move your teeth into position through gentle pressure and gradually the teeth move into their desired position.
Clear aligners such as Clear Correct™ and Invisalign™ provide a great option for those that are conscious of conventional braces. They work using a series of custom-made, very thin clear trays which apply gentle forces to move teeth into the desired position. The trays are removable and taken out to eat food which allows you to continue to eat your desired food with minimal change in your lifestyle. The removable trays also allow you to maintain healthy teeth through regular cleaning and flossing. The trays are replaced and your teeth are assessed every three weeks which means we are in control of your ongoing treatment with clear aligners.
We usually recommend that orthodontic treatment for teenagers begins after all the adult teeth have come through, between 11 to 13 years of age. Dr Sandeep Arora is happy to discuss with you and your child the most appropriate orthodontic treatment, and explain the options available to achieve the best results for your child’s individual situation.
The general acceptance of conventional metal braces in our society and availability of clear aligners has opened this avenue for adults to achieve their desired straight smile and better function. We are happy to discuss with you options for adult braces to help you achieve your desired smile.
Caring for your mouth with Braces
It is very important that you clean your braces every time you brush your teeth. Braces can trap plaque which can lead to tooth decay, tooth discolouration and gum disease. Maintaining good dental hygiene with regular check-ups and cleans is important while you are undertaking this commitment towards your better smile.
